Internet are global collection of many different types of
computers and computer networks that are linked together. Just like a telephone
enables you to talk to someone on the other side of the earth, who also has a
phone, the internet enables someone to exchange information with other
computers and computer users anywhere in
the world.
ORIGIN AND DESIGN OF INTERNET
Internet began as an experiment by the U.S. Department of
Defense in the 1960s with primary goal of helping scientist and researchers
from widely dispersed areas to work together by sharing scales and expensive
computers and their files. To achieve this, it required a set of connected
network that will act as whole combination. Internet, now over two decades old,
has become widely used because of the use of browsers. A browser is a software
tool that greatly amplifies the process of a user’s inquiring different
locations for information on the internet.
COMMON TERMS USED IN INTERNET
Browser: This is a program that allows you to display
and interact with a hypertext document. It allows users to read and listen to the information in the www.
Web Server: this is a software that transfer information
to the user’s computer through a web browser.
The importance of the internet cannot be over emphasized
in the computing world today. The understanding of such importance can be
appreciated under the following sub-headings.
Universal Communication: The facility to
communicate very quickly with people in your work place and across the globe.
Performance: The ability to handle, audit, visual
image and other multimedia property increase the level and effectiveness of
communication.
Cost: The cost of using the internet is low
compared to the conventional means.

To connect to the internet you need;

connecting to internet are: APC using the internet 80486 or better
microprocessor. This is required if you want to use the GUI browser, to surf
the internet.

Also you need a telephone line since communication in
wide area networks can be possible via telephone.
The communication on internet is possible through
protocols. All computers connected to the internet use a common set of rules
for communication purpose. This rules are called protocols. Internet uses a set
of protocols called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol).
The internet application that is currently drawing
attention of the internet users is the
World Wide Web (WWW). It is referred to as the Web, which is graphical
interface used for navigating or accessing through internet.
WWW is a collection of web pages that contain text, images
and multimedia content interconnected through hypertext.
Hypertext is a linked text that contains links to other
text. Images, sound or video. Most of the web pages contain words or phrase
that are displayed in a different colour from the rest of the text and are
underlined. When the user selects one of these words or phrases, the user is
taken to another location in the same document or to an entirely new document.
